Hiking at Pha Taem National Park,
Pha Taem is located about 100km East of the city of Ubon Ratchathani. There is a highway which will get you there - and then once in the vicinity you must follow many signs and turns - better to write down the turns as you make them or you may get lost for a bit. Pha Taem has some historical rock paintings that were left there many years ago. There are about 300 paintings depicting fishing methods and other things about the people that lived in the area. It can be best observed from the Mekong river facing the steepest side. On this side of the cliff historical wall paintings are present. The paintings stretch out over 180m of the cliff wall and contains not less than 300 paintings.
There are lots of rock formations, waterfalls, caves and other things to see. One day probably isn't enough though most take just one day to explore the park. It's QUITE hot in the summer (Feb - June) and even after June really - all the way to November it's very warm. Ubon is hotter than the Southern provinces year round. Bring a couple bottles of water on your hike - just to keep hydrated. The Thais' you see coming back from the hike won't be sweating - Thais' don't sweat much for some reason. But, you WILL sweat. There are some accommodations available though they are very limited. There might be 20 rooms in the whole park to stay - so, reserve them early if possible. On the day we went, without reservations, we were quotes about 2000 baht for one night. Which, is not unreasonable in the USA - and if this is your only trip to the park - might not be unreasonable to you either... We went a few times, the last time we took a friend that had come from America to visit. We took the motorbikes out there and spent the day. It rained a lot which was kind of a plus since we got to see a waterfall coming over the cliff and had to walk through it at one point. Quite a nice experience. The hike to see the paintings takes place over a few kilometers. I'll look it up and get the exact distances - but we're guessing 3-5km. The first part is down the hill then some flat - then back up the hill and more flat. It's a loop. Ok, enjoy. If you need a place to stay in Ubon Ratchathani and you want to stay with a nice Thai man that owns a new house, new dormitories for students, has a taxi, and speaks English fairly well you can contact "Pichet" who lives at 3 Sukkha Uppatcham 7, Ubon Ratchathani Ampur Muang - and he'll let you stay for somewhere around 350 baht per night and he can take you anywhere you want to go in the taxi - Laos, Pha Taem, Cambodia, or anywhere in Isaan.
