Thailand Tips #15: Don’t Come for the Fishing!

Though Thailand has hundreds of miles of oceanside beach you’ll be wasting your time fishing from the shore unless 4 inch baitfish are what you’re after.

I’d even rank the Hawaiian Islands as better fishing from the shore because at least you can catch the great fighting Ulua once a month during midnight fishing.

Seriously – Thailand is that bad.

Anyone go out on the boats for some deep sea fishing? I’m sure it’s better – but how much better?

  1. you say dont come to thailand for the fishing, I say you are wrong, thailand has something that other countries dont have!

Fresh water fish from around the world !!!

Thailand has a fresh water fishing industry that has some fantastic fishing, ok it does not appeal to everyone but even the purest of fisherman can still have a great day out!!

after all where else can you land a 90kg fish inside city limits?? where else can you legaly fish Giant Mekong Catfish (the largest fresh water species in the WORLD) so to say “dont come to thailand for the fishing” is not good, it just goes to show you have not experienced the good side of Thai fishing.

maybe you should drop me a line (email) and I will point you in the direction of some good fish that anyone would be proud to have a picture of!!

    All the best

    1. Thanks “kiwi”… I understand what you’re saying… and sure, there are massive catfishes to catch. I don’t particularly enjoy or care about catching them – but, yeah, some people would. There are various pay to fish lakes around the country and they stalk them with those silver catfish that are good fighters.

I guess I’m comparing fishing in Thailand with fishing in Florida. I thought, before I came to TH that there must be decent ocean fishing from the shore – somewhere. I haven’t found it. Haven’t heard about it. Anyone?

From boats I think you can go out far and find something – from Phuket maybe – Andaman side.

For me – fishing isn’t fishing at a pay lake. That’s what I did when I was 5 years old and my uncle took me out to catch bluegill for 2 hours. I must have caught 30 or more. Great fun when I was 5.

Freshwater fishing? I prefer a stream. Not a lake guy at all really. Rivers? Nahhh.

So – my idea of fishing is pretty much my idea… I’m sure there are some that like fishing in Thailand. It’s not for me.

  2. I won’t even eat the fish here. I’ve been sick twice here in Thailand, I mean really sick, don’t stray more than 6 feet from a bathroom sick. And both times was from eating fish. I believe, it’s because most of the canals, rivers, lakes, ponds and even the ocean close to the beaches are too polluted. I laugh at my Thai friends eating those little bitty fishes that look like minnows. I tell them that back home, we use those for bait.
