I Need a Kindle 3G

Amazon Kindle 3G Size in HandIf anyone has a used, new, refurbished, or stolen Amazon Kindle 3G – 3rd Generation – I want to buy it from you. I haven’t seen any used Kindles on the market in Thailand. Call me crazy but I can’t buy one from a Thai website selling them. Amazon Kindle’s official site does sell to people in Thailand, but only if you have a USA based credit card. Now how many Thais have that? How many long-term expats have that? Not me – mine have expired and I didn’t renew them. Who needs a credit card in Thailand?

The price at Amazon is $189 right now. At Christmas they will surely drop. There are rumors about 4th generation Kindle being available for Christmas. Anyone hear that or am I confusing something? Maybe it was some other tablet producer that was said to be readying something for Christmas.

I was lucky enough to sit next to a guy in Laos that had one of the new Kindles. Before seeing it in action I thought – Kindles are a joke. Who would pay $200 for something that was not color and that was nothing like an iPad.

After I saw it – I realized… this is a reading device that is perfect for reading. That’s all it does. You read on it. There would be less eye-strain than with a physical book. Why? Because you can change the fonts to the size and type that you want. No more straining to see 9pt fonts some of the paperback books are written in.

It’s really an awesome little machine that doesn’t need to compete with the iPad for anything – and it clearly beats the pants of an iPad for reading experience.

I was wondering – who would carry an iPad and a Kindle around at the same time?

Nobody.

If you’re a frequent reader of books you really must get the Kindle 3G. If you are a frequent user of a computer – you’d be a lot better off buying a notebook computer that you can type on. There are touchscreen notebooks by Toshiba, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, etc.

So, if anyone has a Kindle 3G for sale, let me know.

  1. You can buy it directly from amazon.com using Thai credit card. I did that last week and now it’s on its way to my doorstep next week. Otherwise, if you insist that you cannot use Thai credit card, go check out http://www.read.in.th . They sell kindle and some accessories in which you don’t need a credit card to buy from them.

    1. I have a couple of bank cards – a visa and mastercard debit type card. Is that what you used, or you got your card as strictly a credit card in TH? I don’t want to buy from a Thai site, I’d rather go straight through Amazon.

Thanks for the info – we’ll try using our Visa debit card and see if it works.

      1. My card is a local credit card (TH), not a debit card. It just went through fine when I placed my order. I think that the site I mentioned does not require the use of a credit card. They also have a brick and mortar store in chidlom if my memory serves me well. It’s more like they will order it for you and charge you some premium (quite a lot) for the added convenience. However, my preference is to order it directly through amazon which I did.

PS. my kindle arrived and I LOVE IT!!!

        1. I’ve yet to try this Art. I just downloaded the Kindle software for PC and have been using that to read the Kindle books I buy, and those I wrote – to see what the formatting looks like. That’s good to know that your local TH credit card worked – was it a debit card like from the bank, or you applied for a separate credit card only? Cheers, Vern

  2. Hi Vern,
Maybe you should wait for Thailand to get 3G out of the court system and deployed before you get the 3G Kindle?
    Best wishes,
    Lee

    1. Hi Lee,

Well, I don’t expect to be able to use the 3G part of it… however, it also works with Thailand’s GPRS or, EGPRS system (EDGE) – and that’s good enough. I figure, get the 3G version so I can resell it quickly when the next kindle comes out – assuming it’s worth the switch.

Recently I installed the Kindle software on my computer and it’s great because it allows you to see the photos in ebooks in color. The handheld Kindle is just black and white.

Apparently you can read in color using the Kindle software on the iPhone and iPad, iPod too.

      You a reader Lee?
