Promthep Cape, Phuket Island
This is a fun trip on the motorbike from Patong Beach. It’s about a 30-40 minute drive depending how fast you go. If you’re picturing Phuket Island it’s on the right side, over the hill from Patong to Kathu and Phuket town and go right. When you see the windmills you’ll know you’re close.
It’s a hike up a hill to see some Buddhist memorials, with an elephant collection that seems to defy explanation… Then if you’re up to it a short hike down the side of a hill and out onto the cape which affords some nice views - such as this one.
Some locals fish off the rocks of the cape, the rocks are sharp - bring your Teva / Nike sport sandal type shoes to avoid your sandals slipping off and ripping your foot open.
Longtail Boats
Longtail boats are ancient and heavy teak-wood boats that are like long canoes. They are the primary means of transportation for the locals heading across the river or to nearby islands - and also for you if you feel adventurous. If you have a dislike for loud noise you’ll want to avoid these things like malaria as they are SUPER loud. Imagine a Chevy 350 block in back of your head - in the open air - without a muffler and cranked up to push you and 8 other people through the water along with the 4,000 lb boat. It’s deafening. Some longtails are worse than others.
Surin Beach, Phuket
Surin is one of my favorite places to swim and to relax. They have great food there and they wait on you hand and foot. Not like some places in Patong - where they’re reluctant to get out of their chair - the restaurant owners/chair owners come to you and take care of you.
Unfortunately Surin is almost as bad as Pattaya for Thai touts coming by beeping horns, rattling bells, being loud, clearing throats, blowing whistles and every other thing to get your attention so you look at whatever goods they are toting around. If you buy something the other touts sense it - across the beach and they’ll mob you. There is a non-stop parade of people selling fruit, shrimp, squid, tom yum, dolls, sarongs, fuzzy dice, long neck braces, and anything you can think of.
Best bet? Shut your eyes and pretend you’re sleeping - but even that is no guarantee you’ll be left alone. Some will stand there and wait for you to open your eyes.
Anyway, an amazing beach - and watch for Cobras. They killed one in the restroom as a pregnant woman flipped out when she reached behind the toilet to get the scooper to “flush” and it was there with a bright green frog in it’s mouth. They killed it of course - they kill all snakes here which is a shame, but that’s how they deal with them.
Visit Surin Beach in Phuket - you’ll really like it.
Sunset in Thailand
Thailand has some amazing sunsets and usually I have to take a photo. I have thousands. What is it about a sunset that makes us stop and watch it? Thinking about the future? How the world came to be? Not sure - but Thailand has some beautiful sunsets. I can’t even remember where I took this photo in Thailand. Railay beach maybe?
Vern
I’ve been here for just about four years now. I don’t anticipate leaving but who knows. I’m looking forward to really upgrading this ThaiPulse site and taking it to the level I originally intended.
The ThaiPulse blog is still live - and also undergoing revision. I’ve moved it from blogger.com to the new WordPress format and it looks 100% better. I’ll be making that blog the focus of all new information I put up on the site from now on. Should be many updates coming.
If there’s anything missing you’d like to see, drop me a note atThaiPulse ^at^g<m<a<i>l> dot com.
