Tiger temple Thailand (Bangkok) is perhaps the most famous Buddhist Wat to visit and it is located in Bangkok. Tiger Temple has many live tigers there you can have your photos taken with. The tigers have been raised there since babies and I don’t think they’ve brought any wild tigers there that they interact with and let the tourists get close with.

Wat Pha Luang is a Theravada Buddhist temple located near Bangkok, but in the Sai Yok area of Kanchanaburi close to Myanmar. It began in the year of Buddha 2537 (1994).

In 2542 (1999) the temple was given it’s first tiger cub and the tigers have grown in number to about 50 tigers both cubs and adults.

The tigers are well cared for and given vitamin supplements to go along with their regular diet of cooked (boiled) chicken, beef, and dried feline food.

The tigers at Wat Pha Luang are cared for by a combination of monks, and volunteers. Tourists can have their photos taken with the tigers – and even interact with them. Apparently it costs about $100 USD per tiger to feed and take care of them. The entrance fee at the Tiger Temple covers these necessary costs. Entrance fee in 2010? 500 THB – about $16 USD per person.

If you really want to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience you can come for the morning exercise program that costs 4,500 THB. You’ll interact with the volunteers and the tigers on a more extensive level.

Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi is not to be confused with another Theravada Buddhist temple in Southern Thailand called, Wat Tum Sua (Wat Tham Seua) – which means Tiger Cave Temple. Tiger Cave temple is founded on a spot where a tiger lived in a cave there years ago. Ajarn Jumnien is the abbot. There are 1,237 steps to climb up a mountain to an incredible Buddhist shrine including a large gold Buddha and great view of the Krabi province.

If you’re picturing Phuket Island it’s on the right side, over the hill from Patong to Kathu and Phuket town and go right. When you see the windmills you’ll know you’re close.

It’s a hike up a hill to see some Buddhist memorials, with an elephant collection that seems to defy explanation… Then if you’re up to it a short hike down the side of a hill and out onto the cape which affords some nice views – such as this one.

Some locals fish off the rocks of the cape, the rocks are sharp – bring your Teva / Nike sport sandal type shoes to avoid your sandals slipping off and ripping your foot open.

They are the primary means of transportation for the locals heading across the river or to nearby islands – and also for you if you feel adventurous. If you have a dislike for loud noise you’ll want to avoid these things like malaria as they are SUPER loud. Imagine a Chevy 350 block in back of your head – in the open air – without a muffler and cranked up to push you and 8 other people through the water along with the 4,000 lb boat. It’s deafening. Some longtails are worse than others.

Surin is one of my favorite places to swim and to relax. They have great food there and they wait on you hand and foot. Not like some places in Patong – where they’re reluctant to get out of their chair – the restaurant owners/chair owners come to you and take care of you.

Unfortunately Surin is almost as bad as Pattaya for Thai touts coming by beeping horns, rattling bells, being loud, clearing throats, blowing whistles and every other thing to get your attention so you look at whatever goods they are toting around. If you buy something the other touts sense it – across the beach and they’ll mob you. There is a non-stop parade of people selling fruit, shrimp, squid, tom yum, dolls, sarongs, fuzzy dice, long neck braces, and anything you can think of.

Best bet? Shut your eyes and pretend you’re sleeping – but even that is no guarantee you’ll be left alone. Some will stand there and wait for you to open your eyes.

Anyway, an amazing beach – and watch for Cobras. They killed one in the restroom as a pregnant woman flipped out when she reached behind the toilet to get the scooper to “flush” and it was there with a bright green frog in it’s mouth. They killed it of course – they kill all snakes here which is a shame, but that’s how they deal with them.

Visit Surin Beach in Phuket – you’ll really like it.
