Farang Food, and Coffee in Sisaket, Thailand
(Along with Ubon Ratchathani, The heart of Isaan)

[Note]

Having spent some time in Sisaket town and province (Sri Saket or Si Saket) I've come to know exactly 3 places for "Farang food", Western food, or Foreign food there...

[Pizza and German food]

Living in the Past - The only pizza in Sisaket is found here. Unfortunately it is not great. The first time I had it, it was marginal. It was horrible, but for Thailand - I'll accept it. The second time he ran out of cheese and I swear he put artificial cheese slices on it - it would have been better WITHOUT cheese. Don't less this dissuade you from going though, this place is run by a German guy named "Frank" that is a great conversationalist and has been in Thailand for 17 years if I'm not mistaken. Eleven of those years were spent in Sisaket if you can believe it!  He knows Sisaket inside and out and is a great resource for any information you want to know about the province. Besides Pizza he has a menu of German food that MUST be better than the pizza... He has Leo, Heineken, Cuba Libre, and some German beers that are so expensive he doesn't even drink them.

He has a cozy open-aired place under a hut with about 6 tables and western style music playing from his stereo.  He lives on a street that is filled with Sisaket's finest police depart ment heads of staff and so it's quite a safe place to eat.

You must stop and meet Frank if you're in town.

Directions:  Wow. This will be really rough.  If you're coming from town and you cross the railroad tracks and you know where the major police station is in town - you're close. He has a big sign and his place is down the soi a very short distance and he's there all the time since he lives in the house next to it.  Sorry I can't give street names since I've lost them.

[Coffee]

Kiwi Coffee in Sisaket is air conditioned and has free WiFi broadband internet that is a fairly good connection even when raining. I used it about 50 days and it was only inoperative about 3 days (in a row).  The coffee is quite excellent and the locals joke that it's the Sisaket Starbucks.  The espresso yen is about 30 baht. If hot - 25 baht I believe. The coffee has a great taste, I never did ask him if it was Laos coffee or not - but tastes very similar to the Laos coffee shop in Ubon Ratchathani.

The guy who owns the place (rents it) is "Hong". He's a friendly guy and speaks some English but you'd need to pry it out of him.

He keeps it VERY cold on regular days so it's a nice place to relax. He has an electrical outlet on the pole near the fridge - so bring an extension cord because there maybe someone in there already using that one plug and if you plug the extension you both can use it.

Directions:  Next to Northeast Hotel on Si Su Mung Road. (like see-soo-mung).

[Coffee 2]

Believe it or not there are 2 places with WIFI broadband FREE access. Both at coffee shops. This one is on the main road leading to Ubon Ratchathani and is just outside of the city area of Sisaket.

It's at the Esso station next to the convenience store (not 7-11).  It has decent coffee, espresso, frappe, girls with personality working there and really great broadband service for FREE!  In terms of quality of connection - and speed - this place beats the one above, I wish I had found it sooner than I did.

Open from 7 am until late at night - I'm guessing 10 or 11pm. There is one 3 prong electrical outlet and a 2 prong along the back wall by the stairs. The girls have an extension cord you could plug into also if it's crowded in there.

Directions:  Esso Station in Sisaket town on main road (highway) leading to Ubon Ratchthani ( HWY 226).

[Swiss Food]

This is a rumor as I've not seen the place. It's run by a Swiss guy that was traveling when I was in town a while back. Does anyone know - does this place still exist?

Directions?  No idea! In Sisaket though.

[Usual suspects]

The Green Mall in the center of the shopping district and city.  Has a KFC and an MK sukiyaki type restaurant.  That is about it I believe. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

[Laos Coffee]

Now, maybe this is farang food and maybe it isn't... but it's the best coffee place in Ubon and it's VERY cheap compared to the others.  20 baht for cold or hot Laos coffee - imported at the border. The trick is finding it.

Location: From MONTANA HOTEL near Tung C. Muang park... go South on Chayangkun Road and make the first right from the Montana Hotel. Go until you see 7-11 on the right side - maybe 2 blocks. Make a LEFT when you see 7-11. Laos Coffee will be on your left side about 100 meters down. If you DO go there, can you write us with the name of the street that it's on?

Other Cities with Farang Food:

Koh Samui  Phuket  Udonthani  Surat Thani  Ubon Ratchathani
