[Note] |
Having lived in Ubon Ratchathani for over a year
I've come to know some places that "farang food" can be had. I'll
put them in the rows below... |

[Pizza & Italian] |
Risotto's Italian Restaurant - This is a great
tasting place run by two very nice Thai guys and a small staff. The
sauce is NOT your typical SWEET sugar-laced tomato sauce. The sauce
is decent for the spaghetti and the pizza. Now, realize, this is NOT
Scaramelli's Italian Sloppery in New York, but it is the best pizza
you're going to find for quite a few kilometers. (300?) The
only other pizza in Isaan that I thought was decent was in Udonthani
near their mall. There's a separate italian restaurant next to the
mall that was quite OK. My girlfriend would ALWAYS get the
pork chop, mashed potatoes and spinach. The pork chop was TENDER AND
GREAT TASTING. Surprisingly, this restaurant has wine too, which is
rare in Isaan. Prices were pretty reasonable considering
you'll pay more at Pizza Company (which gets old quick). Price for
both of us to eat pizza and pork-chop was something like 400 baht
with drinks. Oh - a TIP - you might not want to eat
their lasagne as it's frozen and not too many people order it. It
may remain in the fridge a long time. Location: North and east of Tung C. Muang Park. On a road that is parallel with Sapphasit road (the road with Sapphasit hospital on it) and one street South of Sapphasit hospital. If you are AT the hospital just take a side street South and look for it on the corner. It has an orange front. |

[Usual suspects] |
Robinson center up Chayangkun road has
SWENSONS (Thais' pronounce "Seven Cent"), Kentucky Fried Chicken
(KFC), A bakery just inside Robinson Center, and Pizza Company on
the outside of the center on Chayangkun Road. As of 6/06 there
was no Mcdonalds or Burger King.
SK Mall on Chayangkun Road and across the
street from Rajabhat University has a KFC, Dairy Queen, Coffee stand
on the first floor and coffee shop on the 3rd floor near the movies
(Major Cineplex: VERY few English movies though.) There is a
restaurant on the 2nd floor right up the steps from the TOT VERY
fast internet cafe that has hamburgers (pork) and french fries. They
also have an incredible assortment of western style desserts but
I've only tried a handful of them. The ones I tried were so-so
(cookies) but I didn't try the really rich, gooey chocolate stuff. |

[Laos Coffee] |
Now, maybe this is farang food and maybe it isn't...
but it's the best coffee place in Ubon and it's VERY cheap compared
to the others. 20 baht for cold or hot Laos coffee - imported
at the border. The trick is finding it. Location: From MONTANA HOTEL near Tung C. Muang park... go South on Chayangkun Road and make the first right from the Montana Hotel. Go until you see 7-11 on the right side - maybe 2 blocks. Make a LEFT when you see 7-11. Laos Coffee will be on your left side about 100 meters down. If you DO go there, can you write us with the name of the street that it's on? |
