Patong beach is a mini-Pattaya with nightlife at it's center. There are phenomenal beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and little-known beaches within an easy drive of rental car or motorbike. If you'll visit one island destination - go to Phuket and take a ferry to Ko Phi Phi for a day. That should be quite a vacation in itself!
