Snorkeling in Ko Samui |
||||||||
|
The place we stay at on Ko Samui has some snorkeling right from the beach. I haven't seen the equipment for rental so maybe best to bring your own. Snorkeling is one of those activities where you might want to buy your own equipment just for the cleanliness factor. Those masks get FULL of snot by the time it's over. I know mine does. If masks aren't cleaned REALLY good... well... you get the idea... The place we stay is between Chaweng beach and Lamai beach. It is the large bay located where the "CLIFF" restaurant is. The small bungalow we stay at is just south of there but I'm not telling you the name since you'll flood it with tourists and we'll lose our place to stay during tourist season. The bay is large and has shallow and deeper areas toward the boulders on the north end. I've snorkeled there during rainy season and so the water was cloudy but there are large boulders in the water too - some creating spaces between them that are filled with fish. I don't see the locals snorkeling here and using gill nets like I did in Hawaii. Not sure if it's illegal. I can't imagine anything really being illegal here in regards to fishing - Thailand is not a regulatory place like the U.S. But even through the murk I was able to see small schools of fish between the rocks and I'm guessing it got better the further out towards open sea. Where I was it was maybe 3-4 meters deep at the most. There are a lot of small places to stay right there on that bay.
