There are MANY tourists stopping off here on their
way to the islands: Ko Samui, Ko Tao, Ko Pangnan, but there are
very few places to eat western style food. This is still very much a
Thai town and the tourists stay for only a few hours usually. It
probably doesn't pay to have decent farang restaurants here. There
are quite a few English teachers in this town and they hang around
certain bars that seem to cater to their food tastes. I'm not up on
that scene though. |

Milano's Italian Restaurant - This is a great
tasting place that is open until around midnight. I've only eaten
their pizza and I can vouch for that. It's the best pizza you'll get
in Surat. That isn't saying much, but it's ok. The large
cheese margarita pizza is about 160 baht. This is a good place to
hang around if you want to meet some tourists going to the islands. Location: Directly across from the pier in Surat Thani. This is the pier where the small food night market is - right on the Tapi River. North of Tung C. Muang Park. On a road that is parallel with Sapphasit road (the road with Sapphasit hospital on it) and one street South. If you are AT the hospital just take a side street South and look for it on the corner. It has an orange front. |

[Usual suspects]

There is no Robinson Center. Big C and Tesco are at opposite ends of town, separated by about 6 kilometers. Both have Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), and I think Dairy Queen. The Swenson's and the Pizza Company are located down near the pier and the Tapi River. Best to ask directions because the name of the road just isn't coming to mind. They are within walking distance of the pier and Milano's pizza. As of 11/16 there is no McDonalds or Burger King and none planned as far as I've heard. | ||||||||

There is a Black Canyon coffee at the Tesco-Lotus
complex. It closed for renovations but now it's back. Their
lattes and cappucinos were always weak before. Anyone have a report? I haven't been back since they reopened. Another Coffee Shop with Air Conditioning is located across the street from the Province of Surat Thani "Spirit House" on the river and before going over the bridge to the island where everyone exercises every evening. The coffee there is GOOD and expensive. Sawasdee Kafe offers FREE wifi and decent coffee.
They also serve beer and all kinds of Thai food. There is indoor Air
conditioned seating as well as outside seating. Nice atmosphere.
Friendly staff.
