Hiking and Adventure on Ko Samui Island,
Surat Thani Province, Thailand

Ko Samui Thailand Hiking!

Girl hiking, Ko Samui island waterfall, Thailand. There are many places to hike on Ko Samui Thailand's island! Usually the hikes are leading to waterfalls, though you can make your own hikes through the woods if you wish. Sometimes the brush isn't so dense that you couldn't pick out your own path.

Snakes would be more plentiful if you got off the regular pathway, though, to be honest we've seen more snakes around our house and in public areas than we ever see in the woods as we're hiking. Hiking in Ko Samui Thailand is really a nice experience for a few reasons:

1. It is not that hot in November, December, January. These are prime times to hike in Ko Samui.

2. There are not that many people hiking through the woods during this same season - this is not yet the full swing of the Ko Samui tourist high season and so you'll not be interacting with too many fellow jungle trekkers.

3. At the end of your hike - will probably be a cool waterfall that you can swim in! The water is safe to swim in here - there aren't any signs for "lepto" something something that Hawaii has all over their freshwater streams. This may be a case of - in the USA you're warned and in Thailand you're not. They likely have some things in the water that aren't so great- but so far I'm ignorant of them.

4. There are refreshment places at the start of the waterfall and sometimes even into the hike a little bit deeper.

Coconut seller on Ko Samui (right). There is one woman in particular that has a little refreshment stand at Na Muang II waterfall. She is so precious... she says, "Hello.... would you like something to drink?" and her voice is so sweet - like an angel, that you probably will think about her voice the whole way up the hike to the waterfall. I did. We then stopped on the way back and bought some things from her that we didn't need and talked to her for a while. She said her husband was sick - he is paralyzed and cannot work - and she works everyday selling cups and bowls and refreshing drinks to the tourists to Ko Samui hiking up to see this incredible waterfall.

In the photo on right she is on the right side.

If you get a fresh coconut and eat it there in the shade under her hut when you finish she will cut open the coconut and expertly slice out the soft fresh coconut meat for you.

Nam Muang II waterfall, Ko Samui, ThailandIt's people like this that, to me, make the whole trip worthwhile... it's not the hike... it's not the perfect weather on Ko Samui. It's not the swim in the waterfall at the top... what I remember the most is this incredible woman that was surviving and taking care of her husband that was paralyzed by selling coconuts and drinks on my trip to the waterfall.

We sat there for a long time just talking to her and asking her about her life... the people that stopped... what they bought, whether she talked to them much... she was such a pleasant lady, full of kindness and really... like an angel... I hope you meet her when you go to Na Muang waterfall in Ko Samui for hiking... or even better, just go to sit and talk to her for a while!
