Ko
Samui Airport in Thailand, some History
Flying into and out of Ko Samui Airport
Samui Airport is located on the north side of Ko Samui island near
Bo Phut beach and the "Big Buddha" and is less than half-an-hour's
drive away from the main tourist area of Ko Samui, Chaweng Beach.
The airport is simple but well designed. It occupies over 500 rai of
land and is surrounded by lush vegetation and the view from the air
is stunning as you fly in. Fly into Ko Samui during the day time,
noon if you can, so you can see the vibrant blue and green colors in
the ocean as the water depth changes and varies the colors.
The Ko Samui airport has been developed with an island style, or
island flair. It has one-story thatched palm roofs and lush tropical
gardens full of flowers and palm trees with bulging coconuts meshing
synergistically with the exotic island environment of one of the
world's most beautiful islands. The airport has been praised highly
by locals and visitors alike for being both aesthetically pleasing
and efficient at moving hordes of tourists through it by the
thousands.
Ko Samui Airport Environmental Awards:
* 1st - Outstanding Architecture 1998 Competition staged by the Siam
Architects Association under the patronage of His Majesty the King
of Thailand.
* Samui Airport also won a Board of National Environment Award in
1989 for Aviation Environmental Protection and Awareness
Ko Samui Airport was designed by the Habita Company over a couple
years and was opened in 1989. The Ko Samui Airport was built with a
total of over 800+ million Thai baht invested with a combination of
local and national funds. It seems like a lot of money, but if you
compare that with how much money Ko Samui Airport is able to bring
to the island every month, 800 million pales in comparison!
Ko Samui Airport has been perhaps THE key reason Ko Samui is
currently a world-class destination for international visitors. The
island is still relatively cheap when compared to Patong Beach, in
Phuket and offers great investment opportunities for locals and
foreigners alike. Ko Samui airport had Dr. Prasarttong-Osoth,
President and CEO of Bangkok Airways, as the motivational force
behind the creation of the airport. He was the key administrator
behind the scenes working to ensure the airport didn't get "back-burnered"
and was kept to a reasonable construction schedule. Of course he had
a vested interest in an airport on Ko Samui, and as it turns out the
airport was a key factor in the success of his airline.
Today Bangkok Airways operates more than 40 flights a day on its
Bangkok-Samui, Samui-Phuket, Samui-Pattaya, Samui-Krabi and
Samui-Singapore flying routes. Air time between Bangkok and Samui is
60 minutes, while the flights on its Samui-Phuket and Samui-Pattaya
routes are under 45 minutes. Before there was a Ko Samui airport
travelers would need to travel to Samui by boat or railways and then
by ferry to Ko Samui, resulting in a long journey of about 13 hours.
Today flights are cheap from Bangkok to Ko Samui Airport, so book a
flight today and save 13 hours of travel...
