Mummy Monk in Ko Samui,
Surat Thani, Thailand

Mummified Monk (Mummy): Ko Samui Thailand

On the lovely island of Ko Samui, Thailand there is a small Buddhist temple that contains the rather well preserved remains of an ex-abbot of Wat Khunaram, Dang Piyasilo or "Phra Kruel Samathakittikhun". This monk was born on Ko Samui and had a rather successful life (monetarily successful) before deciding at the age of 50 years old to dedicate his life to being a Buddhist monk - as many men do in Thailand as they start to get older.

The man, "'Loung Pordaeng", ordained (took monk oaths) in 19944 and became widely known for his dedication to meditation for nearly 20 years. It is said that he foresaw his own death in 1973 when he was 79 years old. After he passed, his earthly body remained preserved so well that his family and the other monks at Wat Khunaram thought they should place his body in a sitting position in the casket surrounded by clear glass so that others may see this "miracle" as some called it.

He is STILL SITTING THERE to this day! I was there about a month ago last and saw him. Someone has placed Ray Ban dark tinted sunglasses on his face which is quite strange to say the least. It's almost a spectacle to visitors. One can get photos without a problem. Thais' frequently are seen kneeling and saying prayers and lighting incense to gain merit (favor) and to pay respect.

The other part of the temple is also interesting... it is overlooking the beach and has a beautifully architectured white stupa. There is a sitting area with a covered roof and some interesting statues.

Directions on Ko Samui Island: This small temple is located on the ocean side of the main street between Nathon and Lamai beach, approximately a 10 minute drive on 4169 "Ring Road" from Hin Tai and Hin Yai (Grandmother and Grandfather Stones), after the junction for turning to the Nam Muang waterfall the temple on the beach will be on your left hand side.
