Things to Do: Snorkeling
Ko Samui Island, Surat Thani, Thailand

Snorkeling trips on Ko Samui, and Ko Tao Thailand!

Snorkeling maskSnorkeling in Ko Samui and the other islands in the Suratthani province, when the visibility is clear can be a great time. When the water is clear, snorkeling is as easy as finding any beach you can get into the water from. There are many locations around Ko Samui that can be found on your own, and this is half the fun.

Snorkeling rental equipment can sometimes be found from your hotel. Ask your front desk clerks if they have rental equipment available, you might be surprised.

You will find some diving shops in Chaweng beach that have some top brand-name equipment. The prices are comparable with what you will find at home, so, if you KNOW you'll be snorkeling a lot you should buy your masks, snorkels, and fins at home before coming.

If you just want something for basic snorkeling you can even find masks and snorkels in the Tesco supermarket or Big C here in Thailand! These stores have a sports section where snorkeling and swimming gear can be found for little money. Of course, that means little quality, so if you will be spending a lot of time in the water snorkeling you should really purchase some decent equipment. For a good snorkeling setup you might pay $80 usd for snorkel, fins, and mask. Ensure your mask is made of silicon if you opt to pay more because rubber and plastic will wear quickly and isn't as safe. If you're relying on the equipment to keep you from ingesting water or drowning - probably better to spend some extra cash. A mask should last 5-10 years for a good silicon snorkeling mask.

If you don't feel like driving around the island to find your own snorkeling spot you can just head to "Tong Takien" beach between Lamai and Chaweng beaches. It's a safe and shallow spot with some rocks that hold fish. You'll like that beach, I promise!

or, you could make a reservation for a snorkeling excursion from most diving shops, schools or travel offices. There are 1st class snorkeling adventures in Angthong National Marine Park for a day, a few days, or more - up to you. Koh Tao has some GREAT snorkeling as well and you can book a bungalow or hootchie type room for 300-600 per night... Koh Tao has many outdoor adventures like kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, snorkeling, and hiking.

If you haven't snorkeled before, and you don't dive - you should REALLY TRY SNORKELING!

It's an activity that the whole family can enjoy. If you can float, you can enjoy snorkeling!
