Welded Metal Art
Ko Samui Island, Surat Thani, Thailand

Welded Life size Art Works in Koh Samui
If you're looking for UNIQUE art work you need go no further than Ko Samui, Thailand.

You've probably seen some of these creations in places like Orlando, Los Angeles, Vegas, and New York City. But, did you ever expect to see welded lifesize art works of stormtroopers on Ko Samui island in Thailand?

Stormtrooper welded metal art on Ko Samui, Thailand near Big Buddha.I didn't, and yet there they were... only slightly out of place in the tiny market at the base of the "Big Buddha" Buddhist statue that sits high atop a hill in Bo Phut, Ko Samui. Thailand is a land of contrasts for real! Go see the Big Buddha, drop some coins in the Buddhist fortune machines, and then go see the futuristic welded art work created out of motorbike, automobile, and other vehicles and machinery.

The prices that we were quoted for some of the pieces seemed reasonable - but who am I to say? I'm no welded stormtrooper art critic. $1000 usd seems like a good price to me. I won't tell you exactly what we were quoted because the prices might be different by the time you arrive. I told them that I live in Surat Thani so the price may have included shipping by boat for all I know. I do think it would be a chore (and expensive) to ship one of these heavy and awkward welded pieces of art. How much would one of these weigh? As much as an automobile's engine block I'm thinking... what's that, about 400 kilograms? How much would that be to ship to America? Australia?

The store had other pieces of this incredibly futuristic welded art - about 10 pieces that we saw that day, some smaller than this large one. There were lots of people looking, it was hard to not be impressed by the level of attention that went into selecting each piece. Thai people are very artistic with their drawing - I saw that while teaching in a high school here. But I think, few make the move to sculptured art or other mediums and even less to the welded art like we saw at this store.

Occasionally in a city in Thailand I've seen a piece of this kind of art - thrown together by the welders that get bored I guess. It's usually outside a repair shop - a muffler shop, some kind of place that they weld a lot. I guess when business gets slow and there's a lot of stuff together - the creative Thai mind takes over and must create something!

You really should stop by the shop and have a look. If you're an art collector this might be something you just can't live without...

The prices we saw started at 15,000 Thai baht and went up from there for these lifesize welded art pieces. If you want more information you'll need to go to Ko Samui, Thailand because I just searched the web and can't find anything about it anywhere!
