Teaching English in Thailand
(Teacher changes coming?)

Many foreigners come to Thailand to teach English.  Prior to now there have been very few rules about who can teach and who cannot. Accused pedophile John Karr changed all that.  Before now if you had either a university degree (in anything) or a TEFL course under your belt - you could teach.

Recently there have been a number of changes that have been passed. Serious changes. I won't attempt to go through them on this site - there is another, better site for this type of thing - Thaivisa has some good forum topics about this subject if forums are your thing.  They are not my thing - they take entirely too long to get to the meat of the information that I need to read... but, sometimes it's all we have...

The new rules are not set in stone yet, and the schools are fighting to make the restrictions less strict... but some changes for teaching English in Thailand will no doubt happen over the next couple of months. An update to this - as of Feb 2008, the word on the street is that teachers wishing to teach in Thailand will need to become certified. In order to do that they'll need to spend about 100,000 Thai Baht to take all the classes necessary to become certified! That's the rumor. Is it accurate. No. They never are, but there will be some changes coming - classes and things for sure. It will probably be implemented over the next few years. If ever. Don't fret... Thailand needs teachers REALLY bad since they've gotten rid of so many and scared so many with the checks by showing up AT schools in Bangkok to see if their teachers have the proper work permits and things. They NEVER check government schools - so if you want to work, work at a government school.

There are a few Articles about teaching that give a good overview what it is really like to live and teach in Thailand. I have an e-book Living in Thailand that touches on it.  Recently I started a teacher resources section of this web site where you can go to download lesson plans, book recommendations, Excel files, Word docs... and other files that will help you teach English in Thailand!
