Thai Culture: SongKran Water Throwing Festival (April 13-15)

[Songkran? What is it?]

Songkran is a water throwing festival that is to help everyone cool off during the hottest days of the year. It is celebrated all over Thailand. Here are some photos from Songkran in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket from 2006.

My friend was going to splash these motorbike goers and then just handed the dad the bowl to douse the little girl. You should be nice to the tiny kids so they enjoy Songkran when they grow up and aren't afraid of it!

This was only half a block of ice, a whole block was going for 100 baht at Songkran 2006.

Water launch from the left, pretty hard by the looks of it... Songkraners that are in trucks are at the mercy of those of us that sit at the side of the road. We've got unlimited water, ice and food.

The rowdy group of high-school songkran-ers before they saw "farang!"

When they saw that the foreigner had a camera they all got together for a pose. It was great - they were all intent on destroying each other with water and then stopped to pose. Thais' are like that usually - they LOVE the camera, so don't be shy about taking photos.

There is a tour of the city by the new "Miss Songkran" for the year. They choose a new girl yearly.

I've seen kids fall out of trucks, it gets pretty hairy sometimes because songkran part iers in the back of the truck don't always know when their ride is going to go forward!

I thought the women were being nice to me and then I felt the ICE COLD water down my back as I posed for the photo... Don't trust ANYONE.

Sometimes if I've given someone a good soaking I turn the cheek and let them "get me".

I had a cheap waterproof
camera this year.

7:30am and they're already out. It was actually a little on the cool side at this hour. AND they had ice water already.  Hmm...

Sometimes those on the trucks have run out of water and they're just sitting ducks waiting for it. They try pitifully to catch water thrown at them to return it. It's a sad state of affairs when you see one of these trucks. "Learned helplessness" comes to mind. They just take it and smile. Take it and smile.

Stay tuned for more Songkran photos!
