Thai Culture: SongKran Water Throwing Festival (April 13-15)
Page 2

[What is it?]

Songkran is a water throwing festival that is to help everyone cool off during the hottest days of the year. It is celebrated all over Thailand. Here are some photos from Songkran in Ubon Ratchathani.

One of my "girlfriends".  During Songkran I might have 15-25 girlfriends (that's per day). ;)

This was only half a block of ice, a whole block was going for 100 baht at Songkran 2006.

Water launch from the left, pretty hard by the looks of it... Songkraners that are in trucks are at the mercy of those of us that sit at the side of the road. We've got unlimited water, ice and food.

I gave this little girl the BIG stick that I made out of PVC and she used it all day. Never mind that it was nearly as big as she was and when it was full of water it was HEAVY for her. She loved squirting 20 feet to hit people with the 32 degree water she had in the trashcan.

Guys walking the streets in posses and dancing like they're on crack!

It's not often 7 people are looking in one place during Songkran, but Thais' have a way of KNOWING when their photo is being taken. Have you noticed that?

A girl and her brother. The brother was a NUT! He was on pure adrenalin all day.

Lots of dancing on the backs of the trucks, especially when the ladyboys (katoeys) or bargirls rolled through.

This girl was prathom 2 (7 yrs) but she seemed as if just 5 yrs old. She was relentless squirting me and playing this game where she froze me with ice and I couldn't move until she threw warm water on me.

Stay tuned for more Songkran photos for 2007!
