There are Thai Buddhist monks that are VERY serious about maintaining the precepts and the numerous rules of their particular flavor of Buddhism and the rules of the wat (temple) they belong to and there are those that are not. Apparently it isn't easy to get kicked out of a temple as a monk. Apparently it's OK to have transgressions as nobody is perfect. Apparently it's OK to do just about whatever you want in some wats in the countryside that aren't run by people that care about presenting a good example of Buddhism, because some do. Just like there are priests in America that take Catholicism seriously and there are those that don't also. Some molest children, adults... Thais' take Buddhism very seriously as a group. If you speak badly about Buddhism you will piss everyone off, though on their faces they are all smiles and non-confrontation (see: Thai concept of Face). Be very careful about what you say about 2 things in this country, and possibly "politics" as a third. 1. The royal family. 2. Buddhism and Monks. 3. Politics
