Thailand Jatukum (Jatukam) Amulets
Video from Wat Tum Sua in Krabi, Thailand

Ajahn Jumnien, Abbot of Krabi, Thailand's "Wat Tum Sua", Tiger Cave Temple.I was walking around Wat Tum Sua as I like to do. I had just been up to the caves where the monks often meditate and I thought I would take a walk up inside the new building they were making.

Thailand is great because as a visitor you can go almost anywhere you like. I have never once been told or asked to not go somewhere. If you just go, usually nobody will say a word!  So, I started climbing the steps of the new temple building (chedi). It's going to be 8 stories it appears like and all 8 are built, though the building is still taking shape. It will be 99 meters high (an auspicious number for Thai people).

On about the third floor I was wandering around and I saw some monks in a small area. On closer inspection, they were pressing the Wat Tum Sua Jatukum (Jatukam) amulets that Thai people are so fond of.

I asked their permission and they allowed me to take some video of them actually pressing the amulets from the clay.

Thai buddhist amulet collector, Somchai

We find some of our authentic Thai amulets here at Somchai's small store. Out of the hundreds of places in Thailand to buy amulets, I trust this guy the most. He (sitting) knows EVERYTHING about them. We have seen him at the local temples and I know he is a devout Buddhist . He has some incredible antique silver-cased amulets that are to die for... Unfortunately, every time I pick out one of the old, heavy silver cases to buy he picks it up - and starts talking to himself in Thai... I know he's repeating where he got it and what it means to him... and he just can't make himself part with them!

He won't sell the ones that are special to him - at any price. On my first visit to meet with him I chose 10 amulets that would have probably gone for $3000 USD.  He would have made a lot of money just from those 10.  He wouldn't sell even ONE of them to me!  This guy is phenomenal. He consented to this photo only because he adores my girlfriend.  Oh, before I forget - he has a very talented daughter who is an artist - see the monk drawings behind him? If you are interested in a custom drawing, painting, or sculpture from his daughter - please email: TryThaiFood [a-t] gmaildotcom

You can see my girlfriend writing notes... he teaches us as we buy and of course we need to know the intimate details of where the amulet came from, the monk on the amulet - who is he? Which temple?
Any special circumstances surrounding the amulet?

He has become our good friend over time...

A very good friend to have in this business...

Cheers Somchai!
