[NOTE: Ferries are great ways to travel. My girlfriend and I usually take a motorbike with us when we go to the islands. From Don Sak Pier in Surat to Ko Samui the fare for both of us AND the motorbike is just 250 baht (about $6 usd) for a 90+ minute boat ride. We've taken ferries from Surat Thani pier to Ko Samui, Don Sak to Samui and Krabi to Ko Lanta multiple times and found them all safe, fun and cheap.] {TIPS: 1-Choose the BIG boats for your ocean journeys if possible. The smaller boats have a history of accidents... especially the "fast boats". The fast boats are longtail boats that are run very dangerously fast over shallow water where they sometimes run into sandbars and send all occupants flying through the air - often to their deaths. Beware of getting on small boats that are filled with too many people. Overcrowded boats returning from Samui and from the full-moon part ies of Pangan have sunk and tourists have died because either they did not know how to swim, they were drunk, or both. 2-ask for life vests before the boat gets started. All longtails should have them if they take passengers - and we've been able to get them everytime we ask. 3-If you fall asleep on a night boat or during the day - keep your valuables in a place nobody can reach easily. We've heard many first hand stories of travellers losing their wallets from front and back pockets.} Ferry Trips: Surat Thani to Ko Samui or Ko Pangna: Night boat leaves about 11:30pm. Arrives Samui about 6 am. Large wooden boat, many people. Usually a handful of westerners. They do not take motorbikes (as far as I know). You can find some sleep space on the floor and sleep the entire distance. Keep valuables in a very safe place (your crotch). Don Sak Pier to Ko Samui or Ko Pangna: starting early morning before 6 am two companies have boats going: Sea Tran and Raja. Sea Tran is the one that was recommended to us for going to Samui. For Ko Pangna, choose Raja. Sea Tran allows us to take our Yamaha Mio motorbike for an extra 30 baht (less than a dollar usd.) They charge 140 baht for one passenger and a motorbike. 110 for additional person. Krabi to Railay Beach: Jao Fa pier in Krabi has a bigger ferry that goes to Railay beach a couple times per day. We've taken just longtail boats from Krabi town pier that are 100 baht per person if we have 8 people but sometimes we can only get 6 passengers to go and the price rises to 150b or 200b for less than 6. The boats go very slow and we felt safe all the time. There were virtually no waves when we went in July and September. Railay beach is very beautiful and we recommend it. You can find a cheap room at YAYA resort for 300b per night - fan room and walk up to 3rd floor. Rooms are fairly clean - about our minimum limit for staying. Krabi to Phi Phi Island to Phuket: There is a ferry that does this run but only during the tourist season. We were told the boats started this trip in October. They will take a motorbike for extra $. We were quoted 500 baht but we're not at all sure what that included - whether it was only motorbike or motorbike and one passenger.
