Thailand Wildlife!
(Beetles - Centipedes - Millipedes - Snakes - Spiders - Frogs - Toads - Scorpion)

There are all kinds of bugs, snakes, spiders and other wildlife to see here in Thailand. If I walk around my yard I'll usually see spiders; 2 cane toads (poisonous); another tree frog that climbs our house and leaves excrement all over it; large snails with shells that eat the excrement left by the frog; millipedes; and a few armies of different species of ants. There are tiny "sweet ants" that are light brown and that love sugar and sweets and don't bite. There are small red ants that bite, but not as painfully as the red ants in Florida. There are small black ants that bite - a little painful.  There are BIG black ants that bite - and pretty painful. There are BIG red ants that bite - and painful for a second, but when they let go there usually isn't even a bump or any itchiness. There are these monstrous size queen ants here - I have a few shots of one we saw in Ko Samui inside the Mcdonalds in Lamai. I took it outside and shot some photos. Here's one: queen ant.

There are so many different animals here that you'll interact with if you live here. Stray dogs and cats are just the beginning. While talking to a family in Isaan one night about 9pm in their home - they had the doors open and as we're talking I saw a HUGE bat fly into the house, go around the bend in their living room - and disappear. I said, DID YOU SEE THAT?  My girlfriend told them what I said - and the whole family - mom, dad, and 3 kids were not bothered by it. They said that the bat LIVES there and is their pet!  That bat had a wingspan of 2/3 to 1 meter across!

So, the Thais are often more tolerant than we might be. Other times not. If they see a snake they usually kill it. I like snakes and I've seen some here - purposefully going out to find them sometimes and other times I've been surprised where I found them. I saw a cobra in the restroom behind a toilet when a local woman came down screaming to tell some men to do something about it.  It had a frog in it's mouth and so it didn't bite the pregnant woman that had sat down to do her business. When she reached for the dish to splash water down the toilet she saw it and ran out screaming - pants around her ankles (I was told - I didn't get to see that part.)
