Thailand Hospital Care – How does it Rate?

Hospitals in Thailand are, on the whole, pretty good. Some of the best hospitals in the world for plastic surgery including transgender operations are in Bangkok. There are also specialists for every sort of ailment found here.

Most provinces have a good quality hospital and they can treat nearly everything right there. Sometimes they’ll send you to Bangkok for specialists and if you have a very serious problem you should probably transfer to a Bangkok hospital as soon as possible if you can afford it.

A friend of mine had a motorbike accident late one night and he ended up with quite a serious head injury and needing a couple of brain surgeries. His family opted to stay at the local provincial hospital because they were told that the surgeons performed brain surgery frequently with all the motorbike accidents that occurred in the province.

He did stay for the duration of his recovery and the entire hospital bill for 2 months, including 2 brain surgeries to remove pieces of his skull that had splintered into the brain tissue was under 60,000 baht. That’s $1500.00 USD. That’s probably $199,000 USD LESS than what it would have been in America. I’m not so sure I would have opted for the same treatment though, considering the first night I spent with him at ICU I saw a dog and a cat roaming around very close to patients’ beds!

Routine problems can be treated at any hospital with some confidence.

      Hi Jane,

Where is your son – which province and city? Thailand has decent healthcare in some places, and in others, no. I would just try to ensure that he’s in a good private hospital. Good hospitals are found in the tourist areas – Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket. Best of luck to your son.
