What is Living in Thailand REALLY Like?

Krabi Snakes | Ao Nang King Cobra Snake Show

Krabi Ao Nang King Cobra Snake Show - Thailand. Olay, a Burmese snake handler holds 3 mangrove cat snakes.

This is the local snake show in Krabi. There is one like it in Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and a couple of other places.

The Krabi King Cobra Show has been around for about a decade. They have shows just about anytime you arrive, even if you are just two people together. At times the snake show is packed and there are 40 people.

There are king cobras (Ophiophagus hannah), monocled cobras (Naja kaouthia), radiated rat snakes aka: copperheaded racers (Coelognathus radiata), and usually a big reticulated python. Before you go sit for the show you can tour the snake cages that surround the center show bleacher area.

There is a cage for monocled cobras, king cobras, pythons, blood pythons, banded kraits (sometimes), cat snakes and red-tailed racers, mangrove cat-eyed snakes (Boiga melanota), and sometimes there are other interesting species available including turtles, Chinese water dragons, or something else.

Though I don’t agree with keeping any animals in captivity except for rehabilitation, in years past I visited this place to see what snakes I could learn about. Often I was able to identify snakes for them. I don’t agree with how they keep them, or literally anything about what they do with the snakes here, but I understand this is Thailand and they live by a different code.

My main SNAKE SITE in Thailand is: ThailandSnakes.com – come by for more detailed information about the snakes of Thailand.

Prior to sitting for the show, you are encouraged to walk around and see the various snakes, lizards, and turtles on display in cages and aquariums. They usually have the snakes found below, as well as some other wildlife – turtles, monitor lizards, and occasionally something really different.

Snakes at Ao Nang King Cobra Show sometimes include:

  • Burmese Pythons
  • Blood Pythons
  • Reticulated Pythons – always have
  • Malayan Pit Vipers
  • King Cobras – always have
  • Monocled Cobras – always have
  • Indo-Chinese Rat Snakes
  • Keeled Rat Snakes (Ptyas carinatus)
  • Banded Kraits
  • Red-tailed Racers (large green rat snakes – beautiful!)
  • Copperheaded Racers – always have
  • Mangrove Cat Snakes – always have
  • Bronzeback Snakes

And usually a couple more surprises like large centipedes, tarantula spiders, scorpions and fun things like that.

The show is open from 0900 until 1700. You can come by yourself or with a group.

The snake show presenters are personable and helpful. They know basic facts about the snakes and if you want a photo with one you are encouraged to do so – no extra charge. Johnny, Jackie, Ip are gone now, but Olay and Owen from Burma are the King Cobra guys now.

The Krabi Ao Nang King Cobra Snake Show is located close to Noppharat Thara Beach. Coming straight out of the beach parking lot you can go up the road… follow the road bearing left at the yellow Muslim temple (following the road actually, not a left turn). Go about .5 km and the snake show is on your right side.

Price varies a little bit, depending on the season. Prices are reasonable.

If you are interested in snake tours – herping tours, you can reserve a tour through the mangroves to find Mangrove Pit Vipers, Mangrove Cat Snakes, Pythons, and other snakes.
