Thailand Scorpion: Do You Check Your Shoes?

Small, poisonous Thailand scorpion.
My sister is in your shoe... be carefulllllll!

This was a gift from God himself… because God knows how much I love bonuses in the form of deadly beasts. What else does god have to do, he’s not paying attention to anything else apparently.

This litter sucker just jumped into my snake tank. No idea how he got there except he must have fallen off something and landed in there. He couldn’t get out so he staked out a corner and quietly got his nap on for a night. I looked in that tank the day before and nothing there – so he’s a recent visitor.

I was just about to drop my new girl in the snake tank when I noticed him there…

What a day… a finger-rotter as “ViperKeeper” calls them (www.youtube.com/viperkeeper) – actually a Malayan Pit Viper – great specimen and good temperament, I should be able to get some great photos over in the red dirt later next week. He calls them finger rotters because if they happen to get you in the finger your fingers are going to melt and they’ll have to remove whatever part the venom spread to.

And, my bonus scorpion. I’ve no idea the scientific name for this scorpion – maybe someone can help?

Don’t check my shoes, since I wear flip-flops. but do check my bedding daily. Had a run in with one of these buggers in my shower a while back… I remember getting stung by one of this guys cousins in Oklahoma some time back.. not a fun experience.

I’ll bet that wasn’t a nice experience… I’ve not had that happen. Yet?

    Hi Vern
Yes, I do check after finding one in my shoe in Saudi Arabia some years back. My post ‘Scorpion Invasion’ (8 Dec 2009) on phanathailife has some pics of adults. Yours is an adolescent, I believe. They are fairly harmless, sting like a wasp, though that can be deadly as you will know. They look pretty monstrous though.

Incidentally, I once saw a friend of mine demonstrate the grip of a tokay gecko, & it didn’t let go of his thumb for over 30 minutes. Even then it only relaxed enough for him to escape. We have a family, they kill mice, so we don’t disturb them. They also used to fight & I guess kill & eat the bats when we had those.

I enjoyed your site a lot – especially the temple photos and articles I’ve yet to read… will give me something to do during downtime… I have some photos of wat suan mokkh, wat pah, and I think wat nong pah pong on thaipulse.com in the buddhism section.. Not sure what all I transferred over from the old site.

That’s great – about the tokay biting down for 30 minutes. Did the guy have something wrapped around his finger or no? The teeth are VERY small – but, someone said his finger bled when bit by one…

Ok, thanks for commenting Lawrence… great site you have.
